“Career-Ending” Fight? De La Hoya On The Potential Consequences Of Benn – Eubank Jr. II

Golden Boy promoter Oscar De la Hoya thinks that if the British fighters Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. fight a rematch, it’ll probably “end their careers” due to the punishment they absorb in a second war.

Eubank Jr. threw almost 1000 punches and had Benn close to being knocked out in rounds 11 and 12. Chris Jr. landed 367 out of 912 thrown for 40.2%. Benn was 215 out of 593, for 36.3%.

Benn and Eubank Jr. don’t have a career. They operate at the domestic British level. So, even if they are physically washed up after a second war, they can continue to fight the same level of opposition as before without any drop off because they’re not fighting world-class fighters.

Eddie Hearn expressed his belief that Benn can win world titles at 147 and 154, but any slight hope of that happening could be dashed if he fights Eubank Jr. again in another grueling match.

Both fighters traded bombs at close range last Saturday night in London, England.  The naturally bigger and more experienced fighter, Eubank Jr. (35-3, 25 KOs), defeated Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision by the scores 116-112 x 3.

De La Hoya’s Warning

“A rematch right away will probably end their careers. It’s that intense,” said Oscar De La Hoya to Fighthype about Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr., if they fight again due to how grueling their first match was.

Promoter Eddie Hearn voiced his concern for Benn’s career if he takes the rematch with Eubank Jr. because he knows it’ll be a grueling fight that will push him to the brink. If Conor just cares about money and getting that big payday, he’ll probably take the rematch. He’s already said he wants to fight Eubank Jr. again.

If Benn returns to the welterweight division after a second fight with Eubank Jr, he’s not going to do well if he fights contenders or any of the champions. Even WBC champ Mario Barrios would be too good for him, especially after getting hit a lot by Eubank Jr.
